AAWDC’s Re-Entry Program, a partnership with the Anne Arundel County Detention Center, provides the opportunity for offenders to successfully transition back into the community with the emphasis on employment.
Inmates eligible for work release receive assistance with job search, including employment and training resources. The work release program allows inmates to be employed while serving their sentences. Work release employment provides several benefits to inmates: sentences are reduced on a day-per-day basis for each day they remain employed, inmates earn a salary, and they have the opportunity to maintain employment upon release from the facility. Employers who hire work-release participants know these employees are motivated to report to work as scheduled and on time, and that they are regularly tested for drugs and alcohol.
Inmates not eligible for work release receive information on resources in their communities, including One- Stop Career Centers, community centers and faith based organizations.
Vocational Program
On June 3, 2011, eight inmates from Ordnance Road Correctional Center graduated from the first 90-hour welding vocational program held at the facility. County Executive Leopold, joined by Department of Detention Facilities Superintendent Terry Kokolis and AAWDC CEO Kirk Murray presented certificates to the graduates. The aim of the program is for inmates to learn marketable skills they can use to make a positive contribution to society upon release. The next class will begin in July.
